February 6, 2025 — Julia Bradbury, a broadcaster and animal advocate, has joined StreetVet's campaign to help homeless pet owners access shelters. The initiative aims to lower shelter rejection rates for homeless individuals with pets.
StreetVet reported that only 10% of hostels in the UK currently allow pets. This forces many to choose between shelter and their animal companions. A recent study showed that 50% of homeless pet owners have been turned away from shelters.

The campaign will offer year-round flea and tick protection for dogs. Flea and tick infestations are a major reason why hostels refuse entry. This preventive treatment will help pets and their owners stay together.
Bradbury visited Cornwall to support the campaign. There, StreetVet provided free flea and tick treatments to pets of the homeless. Cornwall and Devon have over 3,800 homeless individuals, many struggling to find pet-friendly housing.
MSD Animal Health is partnering with StreetVet on this initiative. They are donating flea and tick medication to protect pets for the next year.
StreetVet's Collette Sheaff said this initiative is a lifeline during the cold winter months. She added that it is more important than ever to help homeless people get access to pet-friendly shelter accommodation.
Coastline Housing, a local housing charity, supports StreetVet. They recently donated over £16,000 to the organization. Coastline also allows pets in their homeless center.
Bradbury stated that every pet deserves care and every person should stay with their companion. She praised the effort to ensure pets and owners find safe spaces.
