In a touching story of reunion, Athena, a four-year-old German Shepherd and Husky mix, returned to her family in Green Cove Springs, Florida, on Christmas Eve after being missing for nine days. The joyful moment was made even more special when Athena rang the doorbell to announce her arrival, a scene captured by the family's doorbell camera.
Athena had gone missing on December 15, prompting her owner, Brooke Comer, to launch an extensive search effort. Following his departure from home that day, Comer received a message from a neighbor who had noticed Athena outside their home. Upon returning home, she discovered Athena's collar in her crate but no indication of how the dog had escaped.

Over the next week, Comer worked tirelessly to find her beloved pet. She posted missing dog flyers and enlisted help from neighbors and residents in surrounding areas. Reports indicated that Athena had wandered nearly 20 miles during her time away. Despite numerous sightings and tips from the community, each lead ended in disappointment. Comer remarked that Athena was "the hide-and-seek all-time grand champion," noting that with every sighting, her heart raced as it was a mix of excitement and heartbreak since they were always just one step behind.
The search reached a joyful conclusion early on Christmas Eve. At around 2:30 AM, Comer received an alert from her Ring doorbell camera, accompanied by barking from her other dog. She recalled being in a bit of a daze when she checked her phone and saw Athena jumping at the door and ringing the doorbell.

The moment the door swung open, Athena rushed in and swiftly made her way to Comer's son, who was resting on the couch in a half-asleep state. After showering him with affectionate licks, she grabbed her favorite ball and settled down for a much-needed rest.
Comer expressed heartfelt gratitude for the support she received from neighbors and the wider community during the search. She mentioned that this experience had shown them the kindness of their community. Following Athena’s adventure, plans were underway for a veterinary check-up that would include flea and tick treatments as well as microchipping to ensure she could always find her way home in the future.
Athena's return was described as a Christmas miracle, bringing joy and relief to her family after a week filled with worry and uncertainty.
