It was a quiet morning in Northern California. Then, a bear suddenly appeared near a family’s home.
What happened next turned a normal morning into a fight for survival. A small family dog named Cassie found herself between her owner and the wild animal.
What Happened
It was early morning on September 19. Jeff Wilson let his dog, Cassie, outside. He lived in a rural area of Northern California.
Later, Jeff went outside to bring Cassie back. A black bear was nearby. The bear attacked Jeff and pushed him against the house. He broke two ribs.
Cassie ran toward the bear. The bear grabbed her. Jeff’s wife, Mallory, heard the noise and ran outside. She hit the bear with a chair. The bear dropped Cassie. It then attacked Mallory before running away.
Jeff and Mallory were badly injured. Cassie was also badly hurt. She died two days later.
Officials are investigating the attack. Jeff believes the bear may have been scared too.

Why Do Bears Come Close to Homes?
Bear attacks are rare. But bear problems are increasing in the western US this year.
There are several possible reasons.
Low snowfall: Winter 2025–26 had very little snow in some areas.
Hot weather: Snow melted early. Some areas also got rain instead of snow.
Drought: Berries, nuts and plants became less available.
Fall hunger: Bears need to eat a lot before winter.
Easy food: Trash and pet food can be easy for bears to find.
Hungry bears may move closer to homes when natural food is hard to find.
However, no report says that drought caused the California attack. These factors are linked to the wider increase in bear-human conflicts across the western US.
What Do Studies Say?
Scientists studied the 2026 snow drought. They found that climate change made it about four times more likely. Burning coal, petrol and diesel releases gases that warm the planet. But natural factors also play a role. So, climate change is not the only cause. Experts say it is still too early to call this the “new normal.”
How to Stay Safe From Bears
Follow these simple steps:
- Keep your trash bins closed.
- Feed pets inside the house.
- Do not leave bird food outside.
- Clean your grill after using it.
- Turn on a light before going outside at night.
- Keep pets inside at night.
- Never feed a bear.
- Stay at least 100 yards away from a bear.
Slow Down Climate Change
Dry weather is one reason bear problems are rising across the West
Hot weather can mean less snow. Less snow can mean less food for bears. We can help by reducing pollution.
- Use clean energy: Use solar or wind power when possible.
- Drive less: Walk, cycle or use public transport.
- Save electricity: Turn off lights and fans when not needed.
- Use less fuel: Share rides or use electric vehicles.
- Protect trees: Trees help absorb carbon dioxide.
- Support climate action: Governments and industries also need to act.
Protect Wildlife and Homes
Bears need space. People need safety. We can protect both.
- Protect forests: Avoid building homes deep inside bear habitats.
- Use bear-proof bins: Keep trash away from bears.
- Teach people: Tell campers and neighbours not to leave food outside.
Final Words
Dogs give us love without asking for anything. When we give them care, shelter and affection, they give us their loyalty. Cassie even gave her life to save her family. Let's love our pets, keep them safe and protect the world they live in.
