Health officials in Los Angeles County have reported that up to five house cats have become ill after consuming raw pet food contaminated with the H5N1 bird flu virus. This troubling development has raised new alarms about the risks associated with feeding pets raw food diets.
The contaminated product, identified as Monarch Raw Pet Food, was sold at various farmers' markets throughout California. Following an investigation, health officials confirmed that one cat tested positive for the virus after eating the tainted food, while four other cats from the same household are believed to have contracted the illness as well. Tragically, two of these cats have died, and the remaining three are currently under quarantine and receiving veterinary treatment.
Symptoms in the affected cats included lethargy, respiratory issues such as coughing and sneezing, as well as neurological signs and eye problems. Becky Schlikerman Sernik, a spokesperson for public health, highlighted the seriousness of the situation and urged pet owners to avoid feeding their pets raw food products.
This incident follows a previous report linking another brand of frozen raw pet food, Northwest Naturals, to similar illnesses in cats in Oregon. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LADPH) is actively investigating these cases to assess the extent of contamination and potential risks to other pets.
In response to these developments, health officials are advising pet owners against feeding their pets raw meat or dairy products and encouraging them to report any unusual behavior in their animals to a veterinarian promptly. While there have been no reported human cases linked to these incidents, the potential for severe illness in infected cats is concerning.
Veterinary experts warn that H5N1 bird flu can cause serious health issues in felines, including respiratory distress and neurological complications that can rapidly worsen. Dr. Michael Q. Bailey, president-elect of the American Veterinary Medical Association, emphasized the importance of cooking meat and pasteurizing milk to eliminate harmful pathogens like bird flu.
As investigations continue into the source of contamination and its implications for public health, officials are urging pet owners to remain vigilant and prioritize their pets' safety by avoiding raw food products entirely.
