We give the dogs one day a year. They teach us lessons every day! This August alone, three of them proved it, long before National Dog Day even arrived.

The Story Behind the Day

National Dog Day began with a childhood memory that never left Colleen Paige. When she was just ten years old, her family adopted her first dog, a Sheltie, from a local animal shelter. August 26 was the date that changed her life by bringing that dog into her family. In 2004, Paige established National Dog Day that same day as a tribute to a personal memory.

But the day was never meant to be only about celebrating the dogs already sleeping on our couches. Paige made it to honor the dogs still waiting in shelters and rescues, to get people thinking about adoption, and to acknowledge the multiple ways dogs serve, protect, comfort and help us daily.

This August it came to life in a different way. It seemed to be in all sorts of real events, unexpected rescues, emotional reunions and stories of extraordinary courage. Three dogs, Three very different moments, and Three reminders of what dogs can teach us about loyalty, hope, courage, and love.

Story 1: Loyalty Doesn't Expire

In Maharashtra, one dog, named Sheroo, waited in an empty house for three days. His family had been in a tragedy. Neighbours gave him food and water, but he grew weaker each day. When his owner's grandfather finally arrived, Sheroo clung to him and would not let go. The old man fed him by hand, tears in his eyes.

Lesson:

  • Dogs don't rate loyalty by the hour or the day.
  • They just wait for as long as may be required.
  • Sheroo's wait reminds us that love does not need a reason to stay.

Story 2: Some Lives Are Worth Going the Extra Mile For

On August 14, 2026, a coonhound named Remi fell about 50 feet into a cave in Indiana. Her owner notified conservation officers and a specialized team of cave rescuers was deployed which then worked with a local caver to reach her. Remi was rescued and found safe and unhurt.

Lesson :

  • When someone is trapped, hope can begin with someone simply refusing to give up.
  • Remi's rescue shows how teamwork can turn a frightening situation into a second chance.
  • Sometimes saving a life means going where others cannot.

Story 3: Courage Doesn't Need to Be Asked For

One time, a family in Ontario, Canada, discovered a black bear in their very own kitchen. But their dog Chloe was their only means of defence at that moment. She grabbed the bear's leg and refused to let go, buying her owners the time they needed to get safe. She suffered terrible injuries and she lived to tell about it. Her bravery was recognized by the Purina Animal Hall of Fame.

Lesson:

  • Dogs don't wait to be asked to protect the people they love.
  • Bravery comes naturally to them.
  • Chloe reminds us that heroism often looks like an ordinary dog doing an extraordinary thing.

This is what we actually learned in August

This day always reminds us of what we owe to our dogs. Or maybe the question is not so much one of giving, but of receiving. This August, Sheroo, Remi and Chloe gave everything and asked for nothing. So, pass over the traditional question. Do not ask what you can give your dog today. What did your dog give you this year that you didn't thank them for? That's the gift they really want.
