What if the most popular show in a country had no actors, no script and no plot twists? Only a dog mom, a sleeping pile of puppies and a camera that won't stop recording. That's what's currently going on in Finland. In just two weeks, the round-the-clock puppy livestream Pentulive has attracted close to 2 million viewers, and more people are watching from around the globe. How did a small puppy box become a worldwide hit? Let's take it one step at a time.

Before It Begins: A Show People Wait For All Year

Pentulive, the name of which translates to "Puppy Live" in Finnish, is produced by Yle, Finland's public broadcaster. It belongs to Yle's "slow television" series, with no pressure on anything, and one just watches what happens in real life.

The show was already popular before this year. The fifth season attracted more than a million viewers and was one of the most viewed shows on the Yle Areena streaming service. In 2025, clips also amassed approximately 20 million impressions on social media. When Yle announced a 6th season, the fans were prepared.

Meet the Star: Hilkka, the School Dog

Hilkka, a 4-year-old Lagotto Romagnolo, is this year's mother. The breed has a rather thick, curly coat. In Italy, Lagottos were once used to fetch birds from water during hunts. Today they are known for sniffing out truffles.

Hilkka leads a busy life. She is a school dog and is on maternity leave now. She sometimes hunts truffles, and her main hobby is agility. Her breeder says she is a dog that "thinks everything is fun". She lives with her 11-year-old father, Oko. This would be her 2nd litter.

The father is a Lagotto called Zorro, who lives elsewhere in Finland. This is his 4th and last litter. Yle says that Hilkka's mating and pregnancy were well supervised with visits to a vet.

6 October: The Camera Switches On

The live broadcast began on Tuesday, 6 October 2026 at 7 pm Finnish time. At first there were no puppies at all! Viewers simply watched a pregnant Hilkka rest and wait.

The stream is filmed at the breeder's house. Yle does not disclose the identity of the breeder, so the family can raise the dogs without being disturbed.

10 October: Six Puppies Arrive

In the early hours of 10 October, Hilkka gave birth to six healthy puppies, two girls and four boys. Suddenly the puppy box was alive, with small wriggling bodies.

The Next Two Weeks: The Internet Joins In

Then the numbers took off. Yle reports that 1.85 million unique viewers watched during the first two weeks. The stream was a viral hit in Finland and around the world, according to Euronews on 27 October.

There are no location restrictions, so anyone, anywhere can watch. Sweden's national broadcaster SVT also streams it. Yle's own notes on the episode state that the show's format has been sold to the Netherlands, and that The Times newspaper compared Pentulive to Big Brother.

24 October: The Puppies Get Names

The puppies were named on Saturday 24th October. In birth order, they are Bella, Pepe, Dante, Luna, Enzo and Milo. Fans now had six little characters to follow by name.

What Comes Next

The show lasts about eight weeks. The livestream is planned to run until 20 December. By around mid-December, the puppies will be old enough to leave their mother and go to their new homes. Until then, viewers can watch them open their eyes, get their feet moving, play and get bigger, sleepy day after sleepy day.

Why We Can't Stop Watching

It's really a soothing type of show. Nothing bad happens. A mother nurses her babies, they sleep together in a pile, and someone yawns. When the world is noisy, that quiet is good. It also serves as a reminder of the care that goes into raising a healthy litter.

For Dog Lovers, a Few Takeaways

  • Successful breeding requires planning. Hilkka was monitored during her pregnancy with regular visits to the vet. Responsible breeders put the mother's health first.
  • Puppies need time with their mum. These pups will remain with Hilkka for about 8 weeks before going to their new homes.
  • The first weeks shape a puppy. When taking a puppy home, have a plan in place. Our puppy vaccination schedule and new puppy training tips may help.
  • Feel-good animal stories spread quickly. Hilkka is like the stray dog who got a 3D-printed jaw, an animal who brings strangers together.

The Final Word

Hilkka is just a happy, curly school dog doing what moms do. But her six puppies have turned a quiet Finnish home into a window watched around the world. If you are in need of a quiet break today, you know where to turn.
