Pet grooming in India has now become a full-fledged industry, initially offered by a few city salons, with mobile vans and app-based bookings in most major towns.

That's a beneficial safety net for the owner, but it usually means the quality of service may vary quite a bit. A competent groomer may see a lump that you have missed and give you a calm dog, whereas a careless one may send your dog home with a clipper burn and a shaved double coat.

What Does a Pet Grooming Package Include?

Basic grooming packages offered in India usually include a shampoo and conditioner bath with blow-dry, brushing, nail trims, ear cleaning, sanitary trims around the rear and on the paw pads of the feet, teeth brushing and light cologne.

Full grooming includes a hairstyle (a breed clip or a general trimming) along with scissoring of the face, feet, and tail.

Common separate services include de-shedding, anti-tick baths, medicated shampoo, de-matting, paw conditioning, etc. Always ask exactly what is in the package you were quoted, because grooming means different things at different places.

Salon, Mobile Van Or Home Service: Which Is Better?

Pros include a quality salon with high-velocity dryers, proper adjustable tables and handlers who best understand complicated clips. Cons include the stress of travel to/from the salon and time in a kennel․

A home grooming service is a less stressful grooming option for anxious dogs or senior dogs and cats, as they do not leave their home environment or meet other animals. As equipment is limited and drying takes time, the service is more suited to a bath and tidy than a full cut.

Mobile grooming vans sit in between, bringing the salon to your front gate. This may be a better option for a dog that panics in the car but needs to dry.

How To Choose A Pet Groomer

Look before you book! Is it clean? Are the dogs already waiting there and looking settled? Is the equipment clean and free of defects? Watch how the staff pick up an animal․ That one observation tells you more than any price list․

Then ask about their grooming: How long have they been grooming? Did they have formal training? What do you do if the dog is panicking or snapping? Is the area where the dog gets groomed visible? An experienced and confident groomer can answer all these questions․

Red Flags You Should Not Ignore

Refusing to show you where the grooming happens. Agreeing to shave a double-coated breed upon request without explaining the reasons is a bad idea. Dogs left alone in cages under hot cage dryers. No questions asked about your dog's age, health, temperament or skin history.

And the big one: sedation offered casually as a routine fix for a difficult dog. Sedation is a veterinary decision, not a groomer. If it is suggested lightly, walk out.

How Much Does Pet Grooming Cost in India?

Grooming in India runs roughly ₹500 to ₹3,500 per session. Where you land depends on your dog's size, coat and city, and on whether you book a single service or a full package.

Individual services are the cheapest way in. A basic bath and blow-dry starts around ₹700 to ₹1,250. Nail trimming costs approximately ₹300, ear cleaning ranges from ₹300 to ₹400, and most salons offer a hygiene pack that includes a bath, nail trimming, and ear cleaning for ₹1,200 to ₹1,550.

Full grooming, which adds a haircut and detailed scissoring to all the above, is priced by size:

  • Small breeds such as Pugs, Shih Tzu and Pomeranian: ₹800 to ₹1,800
  • Medium breeds such as Beagle and Cocker Spaniel: ₹1,200 to ₹2,500
  • Large breeds such as Labrador, Golden Retriever and German Shepherd: ₹1,500 to ₹3,500
  • Giant breeds such as Great Dane, Saint Bernard and Husky: ₹2,000 to ₹4,500 and up

Add-ons sit on top.

  • A medicated or anti-tick bath is usually ₹1,200 to ₹1,300.
  • De-shedding is often ₹200 to ₹300 extra on a package.
  • Cat grooming starts around ₹850 to ₹1,000 at home, and feline-trained groomers charge more because there are fewer of them.

Get quotes from two or three providers near you. Be cautious of any price that is significantly lower than the others, as it likely indicates that corners are being cut to achieve that price.

Preparing Your Pet For A Grooming Appointment

Walk your dog and let it relieve itself before you go. Brush out what mats you can. Be honest about bite history, skin problems, allergies and old injuries. Hiding those helps nobody and puts a stranger's hands at risk.

What To Check When You Get Home

Go over your pet properly. Look for nicks, razor burn, redness around the ears, and any sign of stress.

A successful session leaves your dog tidy and behaving normally within an hour. If it comes home shut down, hiding or flinching from your hands, that is worth a hard conversation with the groomer and probably a different one next month.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How much does a full dog groom cost in India?

The cost of a full dog groom in India typically ranges from ₹800 to ₹1,800 for small breeds and from ₹1,500 to ₹3,500 for large breeds, with giant breeds costing even more.

Should I shave my dog in the summer?

Not if it is double coated. That coat blocks heat as well as cold, and a shaved dog burns in the sun.

Can cats be groomed professionally in India?

Yes, but choose a groomer who handles cats regularly. Home service is usually the calmer option.
