German Shepherd vs Golden Retriever: Which Breed Suits Indian Homes?

These are two of the most popular dogs in India, and they get compared as though they were interchangeable.

They are not. One was bred to herd and guard. The other was bred to fetch birds and love everybody. Pick the wrong one and you end up with an unhappy dog and unhappier neighbours.

Intelligent, alert and always on the move, the German Shepherd makes an excellent guard dog and a demanding owner. Left without a task‚ the Shepherd will invent one‚ and you will not like the one it picks. The German Shepherd is also known for its demanding nature․

As a breed‚ the Golden Retriever has a friendly disposition towards just about everyone‚ including burglars․ It was bred to work closely with people‚ to carry things gently in the mouth‚ and to tolerate being handled by people․ They are good with children․ However, they are sensitive and dislike being handled roughly.

In practical terms, the Shepherd is better as a family guard dog, while the Golden is better if you want a family dog and security is not an issue.

The first is heat‚ and while both breeds have double coats made for winter weather‚ the Golden suffers the worst of it in the summer heat․ Never shave either‚ as their undercoat is as good at insulating against the heat as it is against the cold‚ and a shaved one will not regrow properly․ Other summer strategies include walking early and late, leaving out water all day, and running a fan or cooler midday.

The second is shedding, a process seen in both sexes, which occurs throughout the year, since no particular season is present in most of India for shedding. The only thing that more or less helps is an undercoat rake, which I use three or four times a week.

For space and exercise, both are fine with a large flat and a proper walk every day, and both are miserable in a small flat with two short walks. The Shepherd does need more mental stimulation: training, scent games and tasks to undertake. The Golden needs a long walk and a game.

Like other dog breeds, the German Shepherd is prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy (a progressive spinal disorder), bloat (a surgical emergency) and skin allergies in the humid Indian climate.

The Golden Retriever also shares problems with hips and elbows, has a high cancer rate‚ hypothyroidism (common and easily treated), has chronic ear infections due to its droopy ears, and in our hot, humid climate has skin problems and hot spots in the monsoon.

For either breed: ask your breeder for the hip score of each of the parent's hips. This is the one question you must ask․

In metro areas, monthly maintenance for food, including grooming and standard care, is ₹6000 to ₹12000. Goldens spend comparatively more on grooming and repeat treatment for ear infections․ Shepherds are generally more costly to train․ Train both dogs but plan to spend more if hip problems arise․ Insuring the shepherd while young may be practical․

You should only choose a German Shepherd if you want a guarding dog, have time to train and mentally stimulate them every day, have owned dogs in the past, and have space, including a secure outside area.

Choose a Golden Retriever if it's your first dog, you have very young children, you want a placid friend for a busy family, and you can meet the grooming and ear-cleaning requirements.

In short, a cat or dog is not right for you if you live in a small apartment with no access for walking, are away from your apartment twelve hours a day, cannot cope with permanent shedding, or prefer a low-maintenance pet.
