There are beagles on the streets of urban India today․ And it's not hard to see why․ They are small enough for apartment living, their coat is not a problem in Indian weather, they are good with children and difficult to dislike.
They are also loud‚ permanently hungry‚ and completely deaf to your voice the moment they catch an interesting smell․
Here is what it's like to live with one․
Size: Around 10 to 13 kg and 33 to 40 cm tall. Fits a two-bedroom flat comfortably.
Coat: Short and dense, so they handle heat better than most imported breeds and need very little grooming.
Temperament: Friendly, sociable, rarely aggressive. Good with children and other pets.
Health: Generally sturdy compared with many pedigree breeds.

They Are Loud: Beagles bay — a long, carrying howl that is not a normal bark. In an apartment with shared walls, barking is the single most common reason Beagle owners face society complaints.
The Nose Runs The Dog: Beagles were bred to follow scent for hours, ignoring everything else. Off-leash recall is unreliable in most Beagles no matter how well trained. Assume the leash stays on outside secure areas.
They Will Eat Anything: Food motivation is extreme. Beagles gain weight easily, raid bins, steal from plates and will swallow things they should not. Obesity is the most common health problem in Indian Beagles.
They Dislike Being Alone: A pack breed left alone all day gets destructive and vocal.
- Measure every meal:Free-feeding is how beagles become overweight. Use a cup, not an estimate.
- Two meals a day for adults, three for puppies under six months.
- Choose food with real-named protein first on the ingredient list.
- Count the treats: training treats are food. Reduce the meal to match.
- Keep the bin secured: assume your Beagle will find it.
You should be able to feel the ribs easily under a thin layer of fat and see a waist when looking down. If you cannot, cut portions by ten per cent and speak to your vet.
A bored Beagle is a destructive Beagle.
Two walks daily, 30 to 45 minutes each, ideally in the early morning and after sunset in the summer.
Let Them Sniff. A walk that allows the dog to follow scents is much more tiring for them than a brisk march.
Use Scent Games Indoors. Hide treats around the room. Ten minutes of nose work equals a long walk.
Puzzle Feeders Instead Of Bowls. Feeds the body and the brain at once.
- Brush Weekly. They shed steadily, more so in our climate.
- Bathe Every Three To Four Weeks with a dog shampoo.
- Check Ears Weekly. This matters. Those long droopy ears trap moisture and heat, and ear infections are the number one Beagle health complaint in India, especially during the monsoon. Wipe dry after baths and swims.
- Trim Nails Monthly and brush teeth two or three times a week.
Ear Infections. Frequent, and largely preventable with weekly checks.
Obesity. The root of joint, heart and diabetes problems later.
Hypothyroidism. Look for weight gain, lethargy and coat thinning. A blood test confirms it.
Cherry Eye and Glaucoma. Watch for redness, squinting or a visible pink lump at the eye corner.
Intervertebral Disc Issues. Long-backed dogs. Discourage repeated jumping off high sofas and beds.
Epilepsy. Less common, but it does occur. Seizures need a vet, not home management.
- Beagles are intelligent but independent. They were bred to work away from the handler, not to check in with one.
- Reward-Based Only. Harsh methods shut a Beagle down.
- Short Sessions. Five to ten minutes, several times a day.
- Use Food. With this breed it is the easiest lever you have.
- Start recall early, and still keep the leash on near roads.
- Crate Train Gently to help with alone time and to protect your slippers.
Expenses To Look After A Beagle In India
Expect to spend around ₹3000-6000 on food, basic grooming, and other expenses in a metro city, as well as on annual vaccinations, deworming, and ear treatment, which many Beagle owners often forget to budget for.
Is a beagle the right dog for you?
Yes, a Beagle is a good choice if you want a friendly, child-safe, heat-tolerant dog and are willing to commit to two real walks a day while maintaining control over its food intake.
You may want to reconsider if you live in a very noise-sensitive building‚ are gone from the house twelve hours a day‚ or want a dog who walks easily off-leash․
Do Beagles Bark A Lot?
They bay rather than bark, and it carries. Exercise, company and mental work reduce it, but it will not disappear entirely.
Can Beagles Be Left Alone All Day?
Not comfortably. They are a pack breed and cope badly with long isolation.
Are Beagles Good For First-Time Owners?
Yes, with realistic expectations about noise, food obsession and recall.
