Assam Flood: 13-Year-Old Boy Dies Saving His Beloved Puppy

There is a puppy in Assam who is alive today because someone loved him enough to die for him.
That someone was 13 years old.
The puppy's name is Barun.

Ridip was the only child of Dipak and Bharati Panika. His father worked at a tea estate in Sivasagar district. The family had brought home Barun just weeks ago when the puppy was still two and a half months old. During those few days, the boy and the puppy became inseparable. Ridip gave him a nickname, "jaan." It means "life."

On that day, floodwaters surged into the tea garden area of their residence. The water was rising quickly. As Ridip walked with Barun and his aunt towards the higher ground, the puppy jumped into the rising water.

Ridip did not think twice. He went in after him.

He saved Barun. But the current pulled Ridip under, and he was swept away.

His family was trapped in their flooded home through the night. When rescuers reached them the next day, they learned Ridip was gone.

The floods that took him have killed more than 80 people across Assam and affected nearly seven lakh people. Ridip's family lost their home as well. There was nothing left to rebuild with. Their only child was gone.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the family. He gave them money for relief and took Barun in his arms. He told Ridip's parents, "I will help in whichever way I can. You will be able to rebuild your home, but I cannot bring your son back."

Barun still moves through the house where Ridip once lived today. He passes by his picture. Those who stop by the family say that he still appears to be searching for the boy who called him jaan.

Pets are not just animals. For many families, they become more than that. They become life itself.

Affection does not depend on time. Ridip had Barun for few weeks but the bond was real. They weren't friends for a long time. It was about the comfort they found in each other.

Barun is alive. He did not lose his life, Ridip did. But grief does not always stay with humans alone. A pet can also do it, in his own way, while he waits by a photo every day.

The next flood will come. The next pet-parent bond won't be any less real. The only thing that can change is if families have a plan in place before the water rises.

Barun didn't ask to be saved. He was just a puppy, caught in rising water. But the boy who went in after him gave up everything he had left to give.
