In a big step towards improving animal care services in Kerala, the Animal Husbandry Department has launched a mobile veterinary surgery unit in Thiruvananthapuram district. This new initiative aims to make surgical care more accessible for pets and animals across the region.
The unit is operated by a professional team consisting of two veterinary surgeons and trained support staff. It began its operations by successfully performing three surgeries at the Government Veterinary Hospital in Attingal. The surgeries were led by Chief Veterinary Officer Dr. K C Prasad, along with Dr. Ammu Stephenola and Dr. Anu.
To use this facility, pet owners and animal lovers can call the helpline number 1962 to register their request. After registration, the team will perform the necessary surgical procedures at the nearest veterinary hospital to the caller’s location. This system ensures faster access and convenience, especially for those who may face challenges in transporting animals to city-based hospitals.
The headquarters of the mobile unit is located at the Veterinary Office in Pattom, Thiruvananthapuram. According to District Veterinary Officer Dr. D Shinekumar, the service will be gradually expanded to cover all major veterinary centers in the district.

This innovative step by the Animal Husbandry Department is expected to improve the quality of veterinary services in the region, especially in semi-urban and rural areas where access to surgical care can be limited. It also ensures that urgent surgeries and treatments are not delayed due to transport or infrastructure issues.
Animal welfare experts have welcomed the move, calling it a "much-needed service" that will help save the lives of many animals in critical conditions.
The 1962 helpline is open to all—whether you're a pet parent or simply a concerned citizen wanting to help a stray or injured animal. The dedicated veterinary team will ensure that the right care is provided promptly and professionally.
This mobile surgery unit marks a major advancement in Kerala's animal welfare efforts, combining compassion, accessibility, and efficiency to create a more pet-friendly community.
