Horry County police in South Carolina recently captured an escaped kangaroo, sparking curiosity and debate about exotic pet ownership in the region. The incident occurred on Saturday, March 22, when the kangaroo, named JJ, was spotted hopping along the roadside. Officers from the 4th precinct responded promptly and safely returned the marsupial to its owner, Lindsey Richardson.

The escape was reportedly caused by a mischievous goat named Blue, who unlatched the gate to JJ’s enclosure. Richardson explained that Blue, a rescue animal known for his escapades, freed JJ along with other animals for a “field day.” JJ’s brief adventure ended when a police officer used a lead rope to assist Richardson in capturing her pet. Richardson expressed gratitude for the officer’s quick action, stating that without his help, catching JJ would have been nearly impossible.

Photos of JJ beside a patrol car were shared on the Horry County Police Department’s Facebook page. The post quickly garnered attention, with many praising the officers’ efforts and marveling at the unusual rescue.

While South Carolina state law permits kangaroo ownership, municipalities may have specific regulations regarding exotic pets. The incident has reignited discussions about the responsibilities and challenges of owning such animals. Critics argue that exotic pets require specialized care and secure enclosures to prevent escapes.

Richardson defended her decision to keep JJ as a pet, emphasizing her commitment to providing proper care. She also highlighted the strong bond she shares with her animals. Despite the escape, she remains confident in managing her unique household.

This unusual event has captivated residents and raised awareness about exotic pet ownership laws in South Carolina. It serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible pet care and secure enclosures for non-native animals.
