To think that one of the greatest legends in the world of surfing was not a human, but a dog.

Sugar, a cute surfing dog, who touched the hearts of millions of people, died in a short battle with cancer at the age of 16. And she breathed her last, not all by herself but in the arms of the man who had rescued her, on a quiet early morning of the 30th of March, 2025.

It was Ryan Rustan.

But to know why this loss is so weighty. You have to be aware of the starting point of their story.

The Day Two Lives Changed Forever

So many years ago on the streets of Oakland, California, a small and helpless puppy strolled without a home.
She was only seven months old—unknown, unguarded, and not knowing her future.
That’s when Ryan Rustan found her.
It wasn’t planned. It was not uncommon in those days. Just a simple act — a man choosing to help a stray dog.
That moment was two lives long.
Ryan did not merely save Sugar; he provided her with a loving, meaningful life with adventure. And Sugar in her turn, gave him even more a lifetime of a bond.

From First Wave to World Champion

After rescuing Sugar, Ryan took her to the ocean, shortly after.

The next thing was a surprise.

Sugar was not scared but was excited. She was not hesitant but confident. She not only jumped into the water, but she held it in her hands. Then she was on a surf board.

It started as a fun experiment and after a few days it was to be remembered as history in the making.

Sugar went on to:

Win 19 surfing titles

Become a 5-time world dog surfing champion.

Sugar was more than a talented dog to Ryan.

She was family. They were more than friends in terms of training or competition. It was built on trust and love and they shared many moments together- early mornings on the surf and late evenings after a long day.

At one point, Ryan claimed that he was the one who taught her how to enjoy life.

And any person who happened to look at the two together could feel it and be the first animal ever to be inducted into the Surfers Hall of Fame.

She was not playing but leading, educating even human beings on how it works.

This was not just property but this was friendship in its most uncontaminated form.

More Than a Champion

Sugar’s impact wasn’t limited to the ocean. She was also a therapy dog at a Veterans Affairs hospital in Long Beach. There she consoled patients, many of whom were experiencing difficult times. She did not utter a single word, instead she offered people something that is priceless peace, joy and hope. And that was what made Sugar special.

The Moment Everything Changed

The news that no one was ready to get followed. On March 2, Sugar was diagnosed with cancer. It was heartbreaking to Ryan. It was heart breaking to the fans. Time, all of a sudden, was too brief. But even now, in this dark hour, Sugar was still the same, as full of life as full of spirit.

One Last Wave Together

Only a few days after the diagnosis, Ryan took Sugar to the ocean again. She was riding on March 7 on her last wave. The issue of records and titles was no longer a concern. It was in a higher plane. A typical time that best friends spend together.A silent goodbye. A joy of all of it, they had been together.

The Final Goodbye

At the early hours of March 30, Sugar died in the arms of Ryan and it was a peaceful death. The same weapons which had raised her out of the streets. were there to take her in her last moments. Ryan later commented, She taught me to have fun in life. These were simple words and yet they had to endure the years of love, memories, and an indestructible bond. The tale of Sugar, a puppy, which has become a world surfing star, is not only inspirational, but also,It’s a reminder. The reality that a single act of kindness can change the life of a person is a fact. Love is capable of making something out of the ordinary. And that even little souls may have the greatest influence.

Final Thought

Sugar is no more, but her tale is still touching hearts worldwide.
Since legends never fade away.
They live on, in the waves they sailed. The lives they lived, and the love they have left.
And somewhere, over the horizon. Sugar is still riding the waves-- and always by her side is the love of Ryan.
