Lord Tweedmouth kept a yellow retriever called Nous, and a Tweed Water Spaniel named Belle. This crossbreeding is often regarded as the ancestor of the modern Golden Retriever. The products were intelligent with the ability to retrieve instinct, and cooperate.

With time other breeds were introduced like setters, Bloodhounds and other retrievers to reinforce qualities such as stamina, trainability and scenting ability.
