Travelling With Pets In Europe Made Simple

Travelling With Pets In Europe Made Simple

Exploring Europe with your furry companion can be an unforgettable experience—but it takes more than just booking a ticket. Between border rules, health requirements, and your pet’s comfort, a little planning goes a long way.

Start With The Essentials
If you’re traveling within the EU, your dog, cat, or ferret needs three things: a microchip, a valid rabies vaccination, and an EU pet passport. These documents prove your pet is healthy and safe to travel. Dogs in several nations, including Malta, Norway, Finland, Ireland, and Northern Ireland, must also have tapeworm treatment.

An EU Animal Health Certificate is required if you are traveling from another nation into the EU. This must be issued by an official vet within 10 days of arrival, along with a declaration that the trip is non-commercial.

Europe

Know The Limits
Most travelers can bring up to five pets. Any more than that, and you’ll have to show they’re traveling for events such as shows or competitions.

Choose The Right Travel Method
Road trips can be comfortable for pets, as long as they’re secured with harnesses or in carriers. Many European trains welcome small pets in carriers, sometimes for free or for a small fee. Flying is faster but can be stressful—especially if pets must travel in cargo. Always check the airline’s rules before booking.

Make Comfort A Priority
In addition to being well-ventilated and marked "Live Animal," your pet's container should be big enough to allow them to get up, turn, and lie down. Keep familiar toys or blankets inside to ease travel anxiety.

With the right preparation, Europe becomes a playground for both you and your pet—no stressful goodbyes, just shared memories in new cities and landscapes.
