There’s something special about hitting the open road. But if you're traveling with a pet, that freedom comes with a few more responsibilities.
Whether you're heading out for a weekend getaway or relocating across the country, being prepared is key to keeping your pet safe and stress-free during the ride.

Start with a vet visit.
Before you even pack the car, schedule a quick checkup. Make sure your pet is healthy enough to travel, ask about motion sickness, and double-check vaccines and flea/tick protection. If your pet takes medication, stock up. And don’t forget to grab a copy of their medical records—especially if you’re crossing state lines.
Safety comes first.
Allowing your dog to ride shotgun might be adorable, but it's not safe. Pets should always be secured, either in a crash-tested crate or with a pet seatbelt harness in the back seat. No roaming and definitely no heads out the window—debris, wind, and sudden stops can be dangerous.
Make them comfortable.
Bring your pet’s favorite blanket or toy to help them feel at home. Stick to their feeding schedule as much as possible, but avoid large meals right before travel. Short trips beforehand can also help them get used to the car.
Plan your route wisely.
Map out pet-friendly stops every couple of hours so your companion can stretch, hydrate, and take care of business. Even on a moderate day, the temperature inside the vehicle can increase quickly, so never leave them unattended, not even for a brief rest.
Bonus tip: Research emergency vets along your route and save their info. It’s one of those things you hope you’ll never need—but if you do, you’ll be glad you were ready.
With a little planning and a lot of love, road-tripping with your pet can be a great experience—for both of you.
